Computing

At Northleaze CofE Primary School, we aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to thrive in an ever‑changing digital world. Guided by our vision ‘Let your Light Shine’, our Computing curriculum supports all children to develop confidence, independence and responsibility in their use of technology, ensuring equal access to high‑quality learning for all pupils.

The curriculum is structured around the key strands of computer science, information technology, digital literacy and online safety. Through a carefully sequenced progression, pupils build a secure understanding of how technology works, how it can be used creatively and purposefully, and how to navigate the digital world safely. Essential concepts such as algorithms, coding, logic, data representation and problem‑solving are revisited and developed across year groups to strengthen understanding and promote long‑term retention.

Computing at Northleaze is designed to encourage curiosity, collaboration and resilience. Pupils are supported to explore ideas, work together to solve problems and apply their skills across the wider curriculum. Online safety is a fundamental part of our intent, enabling pupils to make informed choices and develop positive digital habits both in school and beyond.

By the time pupils leave Northleaze, they are well-prepared for the next stage of their education and life in modern Britain, ready to use technology safely, creatively and with purpose.

Implementation

Computing is taught in line with the National Curriculum through a well‑planned and progressive programme that builds knowledge, skills and vocabulary from Year 1 to Year 6. Learning is delivered through regular, discrete lessons, alongside purposeful cross‑curricular opportunities that allow pupils to apply their computing skills in meaningful contexts.

Teaching focuses on the three core strands of computer science, information technology and digital literacy, with online safety embedded throughout the curriculum and taught explicitly at the start of each term. This ensures pupils develop a consistent and secure understanding of safe and responsible technology use.

Teachers follow a clear progression map so that key skills such as programming, logical reasoning and debugging are revisited and extended year on year. Lessons encourage exploration, experimentation and collaboration, helping pupils to develop confidence and perseverance. Subject‑specific vocabulary is taught explicitly and regularly reinforced so pupils can articulate their learning with increasing accuracy.

Pupils use a range of age‑appropriate hardware, software and platforms to develop skills in coding, digital design, data handling, word processing and presentation. Online safety is further reinforced through assemblies, national events such as Online Safety Week, and communication with parents and carers to support safe technology use beyond school.

As a reflective school community, we continue to develop our Computing provision by enhancing resources, building staff confidence and creating further opportunities for pupils to apply their skills in real‑life contexts.

Impact

As a result of our Computing curriculum, pupils at Northleaze CofE Primary School become confident and capable users of technology. They leave with a secure understanding of key computing concepts and the ability to apply their skills creatively and effectively across a range of contexts.

Pupils show clear progression in computational thinking, coding and problem‑solving, using concepts such as algorithms, abstraction and debugging with increasing independence. They use digital tools purposefully to create, present and support learning across the curriculum.

Online safety knowledge is well embedded. Pupils can identify potential risks, make sensible choices and know how to seek help when needed, supporting safe and responsible use of technology at school and at home.

Pupils enjoy Computing and are motivated to learn, preparing them well for their next stage of education. Ultimately, the Computing curriculum enables pupils to let their light shine by using technology thoughtfully, creatively and responsibly as part of modern life.
